National Bird Week 2016
October 17, 2016 - October 23, 2016
Event Navigation
For all you bird lovers, National Bird Week is your chance to get involved in bird conservation efforts.
The biggest event throughout this week is the Aussie Backyard Bird Count, billed (get it?) as the biggest citizen science program in the country.
Getting involved is as easy as taking 20 minutes out of your day sometime within the week to visit your backyard, or a local park, and count some birds. You don’t need to be an expert birdwatcher either, anyone can take part with the help of their website and app which will help you identify the birds that are unfamiliar to you. The app will also let you know how many people around you are involved in the count at the same time as you, fostering a sense of solidarity among all you ornithological superfans.
This is the third year the Bird Count has run, and past results have helped researchers understand better how populations of birds are going around the country.
Other activities throughout the week include bird walks, bird breakfasts and photography classes. For more information about what the count will do and information on how to register as a counter visit this website birdlife.org.au/get-involved/whats-on/bird-week/
