Top 5 ways to cure fish boredom

Fish aren’t exactly famous for brains that demand constant stimulation, but that doesn’t mean spending their entire life in the same glass structure won’t get boring. Try following these five simple tips to spice up your fish’s life.

1. Create a realistic tankCreating a tank environment that mirrors your fish’s natural habitat will help keep them happy and at ease. Try filling it with a variety of plants, real or plastic doesn’t matter, and add in some driftwood too. You’re aiming to make it harder for a fish to see from one end of the tank to another in a straight line. By doing this, you create a space for hiding and foraging, keeping your fish entertained and feeling as if it were in the wild.
2. Mix up the tank décor every now and then
   Imagine if you were never allowed to change anything in your room, and you had to stay in it your entire life. Purchase some new features every now and then to add to your tank, especially ones containing holes and passages and tunnels, your fish will love swimming through those. Change your tank into an adventure by setting a shipwreck scene one month, then switching it up into a coral reef the next. Of course it almost goes without saying to make sure the holes are well and truly large enough for your fish to fit through effortlessly.
3. Get a floating toy
   Some fish find these amusing to move around with their head, keeping them occupied while you’re out at work. If your fish isn’t interested, or ignores it after a while, then just remove it, no harm done. If you have a spare ping pong ball around, they can make an excellent alternative. Make sure the ball is clean before putting it in the tank.
4. Put airstones in interesting places
   An airstone is a small object placed into tanks that don’t have any other means of aerating the water, releasing bubbles continuously in a stream. Even if you do have a more conventional pump to aerate your tank you can still use airstones to create an entertaining stream of bubbles that your fish might enjoy swimming through. Think about placing them inside some decorative ornaments. Hopefully your fish will enjoy this as much as Bubbles from Finding Nemo would.
5. Put a mirror or two in the tank
   Who doesn’t like looking at themselves? This should provide something new to look at and try and figure out as well as give them a chance to make sure their fins are on-point. Be careful though, if they start to obsess over it consider removing it again and give them a new toy to play with instead.
