Summer is in full swing and the weather has well and truly warmed up. But with it comes a heap of things we need to take into account
when it comes to our pets’ wellbeing.
- Flea protection
During these warmer months, flea protection isn’t just recommended — it’s essential if you want to avoid your pet constantly itching and scratching and potentially suffering from complications such as flea allergy dermatitis. Make sure your
preventative treatments are up to date. - Diet check
With the warmer weather, it can be wise to check your pet’s diet. Are you exercising your canine more since the weather is so good? Do you need to increase your feeds? Monitor your pet’s weight and if it appears that your canine is getting a little skinny, it may be time to increase the amount you’re feeding or perhaps swap to a better-quality food brand. Always consult your veterinarian before starting any major dietary change. - Tick prevention
Thankfully, nowadays there are many products you can use to help prevent the deadly paralysis tick from latching onto your pet. Whether you use a preventative or not, it’s recommended you check your pet daily for any signs of a tick. You can do this by brushing your fingers through your pet’s fur, applying enough pressure to feel any lumps or bumps. Make sure you check toes, behind ears, under armpits, and around the head and tail. The paralysis tick is particularly prevalent on the east coast of Australia. If you do find a tick, call your local veterinarian immediately and attempt to remove it as soon as possible.
