We all know how important it is to exercise our dogs, right? Every day we need to take our canine companions for a walk, ideally for at least 30 minutes or longer, anywhere up to an hour or perhaps more, depending on your dog’s activity level and breed. But can you get too much of a good thing?
The answer is yes. It’s important not to overexercise your pet, especially in the warmer months of the year. If your pet shows signs of overheating, it’s well and truly time to stop the walk. Other things to consider before putting Fido on a lead for a longer period of time include age. Both young and elderly dogs need less exercise than a typical middle-aged pooch, and should therefore be walked accordingly.
Size can also change the amount of exercise your pet will need. After all, a smaller dog will take more steps to cover the same ground as a larger dog, meaning length and therefore time will vary.
Finally, your dog’s state of health will indicate how much exercise it needs. If your pet is unwell or showing signs of discomfort, if your pooch suffers from arthritis, or if your dog just doesn’t seem his normal self, it could benefit from a lighter exercise routine, under instruction from your vet, of course. So before you take your dog out for a walk, make sure you consider his health and specific needs.
