Is your cat getting a little down? Cheer her up with our top ten tips!
- Get a scratching post
Not only will this provide your cat with something to do, it’ll give them a designated area for scratching so they aren’t tempted to use your furniture instead! - Take your cat for walks
Your cat can benefit just as much as your dog can from exercise or seeing a new part of the neighbourhood. Sure, people might think you look a little silly with your cat on a harness but it’s increasingly common. - Provide new toys often
You don’t need to go and buy any toys at all, cats are inquisitive and will enjoy finding their way around any household object you don’t need anymore. A piece of string or an empty tissue box are the kinds of things your cat could have a lot of fun exploring. - Play with your cat yourself
It’s one thing to provide toys for when you’re not there, but when you are make sure to spend some time moving the string around, or shining a light on the floor. Your cat will thank you for the exercise and the mental stimulation. - Change their litter tray often
Cats are notoriously fussy, and in this case you can’t really blame them. Uncleanliness and odours impact on their ability to hunt. Their instincts don’t appreciate a stink. - Vary their food from day to day
Find out which few types of cat food your cat enjoys most and rotate through the various flavours. The same flavour all the time can get pretty boring. - Pat your cat the way it wants to be patted
Cats are not as accommodating as dogs and are a bit more particular as to where and how you can pat them. As a general rule, pat from head to tail to avoid ruffling the fur and avoid their belly or paws. - Allow your cat free access between inside and outside
Getting a cat flap is a great way to do this without letting flies or other unwanted critters in. If you live in an apartment and this is impossible, give your cat regular supervised outdoor time. - Have plenty of windows so they can see out
Cats love to watch the world go by, and it gives them an opportunity to soak up some sun from the comfort of indoors. - Hide food to simulate hunting
If you don’t want your cat to hunt then simulate it in the house by hiding food around in tricky locations or putting it in a toy. Just make sure you don’t hide food anywhere that your cat would be at risk trying to reach.
