Last time, Dr Katrina started to teach us more about keeping an active dog entertained. This edition, she continues her useful ideas.
After sharing my life with a Border Collie for 14 years, I know just how important it is to keep an active dog entertained, both physically and mentally. Here are the rest of my tried-and-tested tips to help satisfy the needs of an active dog and hopefully keep your house and garden intact.
Training sessions
Short training sessions of five to 10 minutes in duration will offer your dog a mental workout and will help tire him out. If you do two or three short training sessions per day not only will you teach your dog fantastic manners around the house, you’ll help him satisfy his needs for mental stimulation. Trick training is also a fun way to bond with your dog while getting his brain working.
Group training classes are fantastic for teaching your dog manners, as well as socialising and learning how to behave in an environment that has lots of distractions.
Dog sport
Canine sports such as flyball and agility are a brilliant way for your dog to burn off energy and have a lot of fun, too. Most dogs will crash out and blissfully sleep after a session of these sports. Joining a dog club is also a great way to meet other like-minded dog owners.
Interactive toys
The act of chewing helps prevent boredom and a KONG Iceberg will keep your dog entertained for ages. Give your dog the Iceberg just before you leave the house so she will associate you leaving with being given something yummy to chew on.
