Isabel’s Welsh pony, Bel, shares a special bond her the young owner.
Here is the story of my Welsh pony, Bel.
When I was 10 years old, my mum and dad bought me my very own pony! I was so excited.
Four days after, I took her to my riding school for agistment. She got a skin condition called rain scald, which made all the hair on her back fall out and her skin went all pussy and red. Because the rain scald was where the saddle goes, I couldn’t ride Bel for two long months. All I could really do was watch her graze in the paddock and give her regular feeds.
Even though I couldn’t ride Bel just yet, it was fun getting to know her from the ground. But one day at my riding school, my dog got off the lead and killed my riding instructor’s chicken; I was devastated. I ran straight back to Bel and just cried with my face buried in hers. She just stood there and let me cry, which she normally wouldn’t let me do; she must have known I needed her.
I have now owned Bel for just over year and we are really good friends. We have entered two gymkhanas and won 16 ribbons already! All the hair on her back has grown back, which is really good. I really love Bel and couldn’t ask for a better pony.
