Are you looking for an exciting and competitive way to bond with your horse? Tim Falk finds out what it takes to compete in the fun and challenging Olympic equestrian sports of Eventing, Dressage and Jumping.
If you love horses, sometimes there’s nothing better than going out for a ride with your pet. Whether you’re just taking a leisurely stroll or getting up a full head of steam, it’s a great way for you to bond with your magnificent animal companion.
But there’s a whole lot more you and your horse can do than just go for a trot; the sport of equestrian offers an enjoyable and challenging pastime for you and your horse, and it could one day even lead you to the Olympic Games.
The equestrian sports of Dressage, Eventing and Jumping all form an important part of the Olympic schedule and they’ll feature once again at the 2016 Rio Olympics in August. “Dressage is unlike any other Olympic sport. It’s very unique with a rich history,” says Morgan Duell, a 21-year-old dressage rider from Victoria. Morgan started riding just before she turned two years old, and her years of experience paid off last year when she was crowned the Equestrian Grand Final Dressage Champion.
“At the recent Adelaide International Three-day Event, I competed in the Dressage class of the Equestrian Grand Final,” Morgan explains, “and while I do love competing I get quite nervous. Coming into the final round I was extremely nervous, but through a lot of preparation I was able to channel the nerves into using them positively so I could compete with a clear mind. I was extremely fortunate to win the freestyle and therefore become the 2015 Equestrian Grand Final Dressage Champion.”
