Whether it’s at the beach or in the pool, swimming can be a fun activity for you and your pet. But what safety tips do you need to know first? Carrol Baker reports.
Starting to feel the hot sizzle of summer? When temperatures start to soar you and your happy hound can keep your cool, by taking a refreshing swim. Jumping in the waves together or taking a dip in a freshwater stream is good fun, and it has awesome health benefits for you and your pooch.
Dr Kat Gregory, veterinary behaviourist says taking your dog swimming is not only a fantastic way to bond with your pet, it’s a low impact, cardio exercise, that improves flexibility, and can give you both a great all-over body work out.
Perhaps the best thing of all though, is it’s exciting varying your usual routine of walks in the park, with running and splashing in the surf, or playing fetch with tennis balls skimming across the water. Your dog is going to love it!
- Playing it safe. Before you and your dog take the plunge, assess the water conditions.
- How well can your pooch swim? You might think all dogs can doggie paddle well, but it turns out not all breeds are good swimmers, and some don’t even enjoy being in the water.
- Take it slow. If you aren’t sure how well your dog can swim, Donna suggests introducing them to the water slowly, and in a controlled manner, while they are on lead.
- Keep a watchful eye. Always supervise your dog in the water.
- A helping paw. A doggie lifejacket can help your dog gain confidence in the water.
- Dangers of drinking water. Don’t let your dog drink seawater or pond water. “Drinking salty water can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration,” says Dr Kat.
- Swimming pool safety. If you have a swimming pool at home, make sure your dog can swim, and teach them how to exit the pool safely.
