While the weather certainly has a chill to it, it’s warmest in the middle of the day — which makes June and July the perfect months to have a picnic! Why not get your four-legged friend, be it a horse, dog, or even a cat (some of those cat leads are pretty cute, you know!) and go for a picnic, whether it be lunch in a local park, or even just with a blanket in the middle of your backyard.
Here are our top pet picnic tips:
- Take doggy bags. It is illegal to leave your dog’s mess on the ground. Take bags and clean up after you and your friend.
- Bring along a favourite toy. Whether you have a dog who loves chasing the ball, or a cat obsessed with one of those shiny, crinkly toy things, bringing those items along on your picnic will help your pet feel at ease in an unfamiliar environment — and hopefully distract them from your food, too.
- Don’t forget food for your furry friend! Whether you’re talking about bringing some treats to reward your horse, cat or dog for good behaviour or even a full meal, should your pet eat at lunchtime, bringing some kind of edible item so your pet can enjoy the picnic too is definitely a good idea.
When it comes to dog food, we find biscuits are easy enough to transport in a zip-lock bag. Since we’re out enjoying nature, we like the idea of bringing an all-natural treat for our pets — at the moment, we love the 100% Pure Beef, Pure Chicken and Pure Turkey for dogs from Whole Life Pet Products. This product is just as the label states — pure meat, ensuring your dog’s diet is just as nature intended it to be.
Or, if you’re taking some treats for your cat, why not look at bringing Ultimates Indulge, an easy-to-transport food solution that has no meat or cereal by-products contained. Instead, Ultimates Indulge is made from the finest red meats and fish as nature intended for your cat to eat — and, since we’re all about exploring nature while on our pet picnic, feeding our pets in a similar manner makes sense, right?
And, if you do decide to do feed your dog or cat on site, make sure you bring an Ant Proof Plate along with you. This all-natural product repels ants and other insects, keeping them out of your pet’s meal the natural way. - Bring along some water. Keeping your pet hydrated, even during the cooler months of the year, is absolutely important, and not something you should forget.
