There’s no shortage of native birds here in Australia with Cockatoos, Kookaburras and Magpies making very regular appearances in our backyards and local parks. It’s no wonder people want an Aussie native as a pet.
It’s important to note that there are restrictions in place when it comes to owning a pet. These restrictions vary state to state. Native birds are still protected and it is illegal to trap or catch them in the wild.
Here are just a couple of native Australian birds that make a great pet:
- Budgerigar
Also known as the Parakeet, the Budgerigar is one of the most common household birds in Australia. Budgies are the perfect pet bird for children or someone who has never owned a pet bird before. The Budgerigar is a true show pony with a bright and outgoing personality and is suited to small cage living. - Galah
The Galah is the most common and the smallest Cockatoo in Australia. With the proper housing (a large aviary), Galahs can make a great pet for anyone willing to take on a large bird, or two. The Galah is also the quietest Cockatoo but they still scream loudly. The Galah thrives on companionship with other birds. - Cockatiel
Regarded as a great pet, the Cockatiel is a small to medium and sweet tempered bird. Cockatiels are able to live with a single companion, in a flock of Cockatiels and with a collection of other birds. Cockatiels should also be allowed out of their cage for regular exercise, unless they are housed in a large, horizontal cage or aviary. The Cockatiel is a very affectionate bird that is suitable to apartments and nursing homes. - Rainbow Lorikeet
The colourful Rainbow Lorikeet is the perfect pet for anyone willing to dedicate a lot of their time to a bird. A single Lorikeet can live in a small cage inside the house if it is allowed to fly around on its own regularly. Otherwise, an aviary would be a better choice. Lorikeets are known for producing a high volume of droppings. Make sure the cage or aviary they are kept in can be hosed down and cleaned often and effectively.
